Ships Inn, Nantucket 2011

When Trudie and I went to Nantucket last summer for our two weeks of shooting, we spent a couple nights at Ships Inn before our house was available.

We discovered that our first day had to be a transition day.

It became a day to shift our energy, tune into each other, allowing time to reorient and connect in this new place. We agreed to have no agenda, no place to go, nothing to do.

That morning I noticed Trudie sitting in the window in a moment of reflection. She was writing down her thoughts about being a muse. As has happened so many times before, she inspired me to pick up my camera and begin to photograph. This moment becomes one of the many in the body of work that shows our life together.

I like seeing Trudie among the patterns and textures of the wallpaper and leaves outside; foreground, middle ground and background.

Pushing the Boundaries

When I look at Trudie I’m inspired to pick up my camera. Sometimes I see her beauty other times I see texture and rhythm. The photos I take of her are very intimate and personal. They are a part of our experience, our relationship. I’m not satisfied unless I feel the intimacy “my truth” in the images.

I photograph Trudie because I care about her. I’m fascinated with her. I keep coming back for more. It is my way of connecting to her. This is what “muse” means to me. Trudie works with me to create the outcome I’m looking for. She is my partner.

When I display the work I’m pushing my boundaries. Sometimes I feel I’m going too far, that my images are too explicit and I’m going to offend someone. It’s not my intent; I just want to expand the dialogue to what I really care about.

Tracks II, Great Point, 2008

The trip out to Great Point Lighthouse took us about an hour.
A big part of the journey was maneuvering around the tracks in the sand; ruts, cross overs and sometimes around an oncoming car returning from the Point.

I had Trudie drive the truck so I could photograph the tracks in the sand from the sun roof.

We stopped half way to let the beauty and vastness of the space wash over us.

Great Point Lighthouse, Nantucket, 2008

We made the journey to Great Point four times to photograph the lighthouse. Each day I looked at the images feeling like something intangible was missing. On the day before leaving the island a realization came to me during my morning meditation; the lighthouse was meant to be seen from the water.
It was a blessing that our friend, Carl Jelleme, offered to take us out on his boat the next day. When I saw the lighthouse from this vantage point I felt an excitement and connection that I hadn’t felt before. The point was closed off to cars because of the hatching plovers and we even
had some clouds.
